Pizza Margherita
The story behind this pizza is that it was created for and is named after the Italian Queen Margherita while she visited Naples in 1889. A Pizzaioli, Rafaele Esposito, designed this pizza to incorporate all of the colors of the Italian flag – red, green and white.
Apparently the queen loved this pizza and so did most Italians!
Fortunately for us, this pizza became popular outside of Naples and has made it across the ocean to America!
This pizza may seem plain at first since so many Americans are used to pizzas that are stuffed with toppings. However, just a few simple fresh ingredients make this one of the most delicious pizzas I have ever made, with its simplicity also making it one of the easiest. You must use fresh, vine ripened tomatoes and fresh basil or the flavor will not compare to the real thing. I love this pizza in the summer when good produce is abundant and my fresh basil is flourishing in the garden. It is a great pizza for grilling and there is no need to fuss over cooking meats.
Ingredients:
This pizza is best with a traditional thin crust that lends itself well to
grilling
or baking on a pizza stone.
Directions:
Place your dough on a pizza peel to bake on a stone, or put into pizza pan. Slice the fresh mozzerella and fresh tomatoes into 1/4" slices. Scatter the cheese on top of your pizza crust. Next top with your tomato slices then your fresh basil leaves. Bake in the oven at 425°F for 12-15 minutes or until the cheese is just melted and golden brown.
That's it. Enjoy!
